Cannery

Arts, crafts and other items for sale by locals to the passengers aboard the S.S. Aleutian as the ship traveled through Southeast Alaska in August, 1935.

Filmed circa 1950s by Robert Pendley who was a mechanic at Icy Straits Salmon Packing Company for fifteen seasons.

The Bear would unload fish by pitching it off with a fish pew, a long handle with a sharp curved end.

Bill Welsh was one of three sons of Robert and Jeanice Welsh. The Welsh family association with the cannery spanned approximately 20 years, beginning in the 1930s.

From the air you can see cannery housing, a fuel tank and in the far top of the photo on the beach front are smoke houses owned by Hoonah families.

Paul Dybdahl, Sr. was the tender captain of the Point Sophia and became the watchman during winters.
