Hoonah Cannery Workers 1948

Summary:
Icy Straits Salmon Company cannery workers sitting on a bench.
Traditional Knowledge:

The bench the men are seated on still remains as pictured to this day, with decades of names carved on the bench seat. Approximately 80% of the cannery was employed by Hoonah residents in the 1940s. Natives of the area almost exclusively caught the fish for and worked for the cannery. Pictured standing is Bud Turner who was Jeanice Welch's brother. The pipe coming out of the ground on the right hand side of the photo was a water fountain that remained usable through the 1990s. The water came from a series of dams above where the "tunnel" is located, about half way from the cannery to Hoonah.
