Alaska Hoonah City 1932 Survey Map

A territorial survey of the City of Hoonah in 1932.

The City of Hoonah was incorporated as a first-class city in 1946. This survey shows how the Town of Hoonah was laid out before the 1944 fire that leveled the town. When rebuilding the town, the town fathers came up with a completely different look for how the town would be organized and laid out for the future growth of the town. Notice there are no roads at this time.

Cultural Narrative:

The location of the town was strategically chosen to be protected from the north wind, and its position along the water’s edge made it easier to conduct daily activities crucial to the survival of the community.
