It is likely that these boats are gathered for Memorial Day, as it was tradition to take community members over to Pitt (Graveyard) Island, seen on the right.

Fishing was a lifestyle for Hoonah men and their families, as though it was in their DNA, you grew up and worked on a boat.

In the 50's and 60's, Hoonah was known as home of the million dollar fleet for their skill, ability, success and how well they kept their boats.

Captained by Jim Marks, The Evolution was a family run boat, like many Hoonah boats were.

Bill Welsh was one of three sons of Robert and Jeanice Welsh. The Welsh family association with the cannery spanned approximately 20 years, beginning in the 1930s.
