Patrick Gilbert Mills received the National Defense Service Medal for his service in Europe during the Vietnam War.  While stationed in Germany he worked as an army radio technician who was often housed on Air Force bases (working in conjunction with the U.S Air Force) using radar displays and radios to guide aircraft approaching and departing airports, generally within a 30- to 50-mile radius up to 10,000 feet, as well as aircraft that may be flying over that airspace.

He was honorably discharged in 1968.
