John K. Smith (Kaa jeis doo een) was born March 15, 1883 in Hoonah. He was T’akdeintaan, Tsalxaan Hít (Mt. Fairweather House). His father was from Klukwan and his mother was from Hoonah.  He fished with the Northwestern Fisheries Company in Dundas, Alaska.  He was a culture bearer and noted for his knowledge of traditional ways.

He was married to Jennie Smith, born May 30, 1879.  She had had a single child who was deceased.  They adopted a daughter, Baby Girl Johnnie.

John K. Smith married Bessie Fox, an Alaska native woman from Klukwan.  At this time he was a widower. She had been married twice; one marriage ended in divorce the other by the death of her spouse.  She passed away in 1952.

He was part of the Salvation Army Alaska Native Congress. Juneau, Alaska. Nov. 28, 1925.
