Andrew James Johnnie Sr. 1921 - 2002

Andrew James Johnnie Sr. (he carried three names, one of which was Delt Xoon) passed on May 20, 2002, in Juneau.  He was the speaker for Chookaneidí, Xáay Hít (Yellow Cedar House) of Hoonah, AK.

Andrew was born March 7, 1921, in Saxman, to James and Lily Johnnie. He served in the Alaska Territorial Guard.  He returned to Hoonah, AK from Sitka at age 21 where he fished on several boats including the North Pass, St. Peter, Alberta and Mary Joanne. He both seined and hand trolled. He was the first Tlingit to become a powder monkey in the mines, he also worked as a truck driver, tree faller, an Emergency Medical Technician, firefighter and police officer.  He was a certified substance abuse counselor with a degree from the University of Alaska Southeast. He was a welder and inspector on the Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline. His family says he was one of the great men who liked to help solve problems.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father.  He is survived by his wife, Alice Williams Johnnie; sons August Johnnie, Andy Johnnie and Thomas Johnnie; daughter Pauline Case; and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Eric Williams, Darren Weathers, Tom Mooney, Russel Ford, Percy Douglas, Chuck Miller, Greg Martin, Gary Martin and Nelson Dushane. Honorary pallbearers were John Wilson Jr., Raymond Wilson, Donald Wilson, John Martin, Al Martin, Marianne Wilson, Norma Wilson, Herriot Roberts, Beatrice Wilson, David Davis Sr., Hermon Davis Sr. and Jake White Sr.  He was then married to Matilda Fawcett.
