Description:

Everett Glover, Tlingit name YeiH Nlooh Noxy, Teikweidí, Various Houses, served in the Navy on the Destroyer Escort USS McMorris during the Vietnam war.

Everett Glover enlisted in the U.S. Navy from Oakland, California.  “I knew I would be drafted.”  His Mother had convinced him to join the Navy to “keep the family tradition going”.

Mr. Glover had an active life growing up in Hoonah and said that boot camp was “more or less a breeze.”  He served from 1966 – 1970, much of it on the destroyer escort USS McMorris where he was an engine mechanic.

When he originally flew in to Vietnam, mortar rounds were dropping on the Tan Son Nhut Air Base; the plane had to circle around until it got the all clear and land later. He said it “Looked like a movie scene, seeing all the mud and dirt flying into the air but it was the ‘real deal’”.  He had to rush into the building as he and others were worried about small arms fire.

Mr. Glover was in Saigon for a week before going to his riverine unit.  He stayed on the USS Benewah (APB-35), a barracks ship of the United States Navy, and lead ship of her class. She was notable for her service in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War.

Everett Glover received the combat action ribbon, Vietnam.  He was also wounded during his service; his eardrum became detached.

He spent two years in Pearl Harbor and fourteen months on the Mekong Delta.
