Bertina married Clarence “Pete” Peterson in 1940. Pete came to Hoonah as a seine crewmember from Washington. Together they had three children, Amy Lou, Floyd and Evalee. Bertina and her siblings Virginia and Patrick were adopted by Charles and Eva (Davis) Bevans who was Jennie Malcolm’s sister. Charles and Eva Bevans had a store and Bertina grew up working in it. Bertina worked in Juneau for the State of Alaska and in the Hoonah post office for many years. She also worked in the Anchorage Native medical hospital as a bookkeeper. She loved to garden and was a great seamstress who also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and painting. Bertina was also an excellent cook.
